It’s a big challenge to launch a successful community recreation or sporting initiative: but it’s an even bigger challenge to keep it going. A sustainable programme doesn’t just happen, it has to be well planned, led, promoted and supported. It needs the flexibility to change. And it is very likely that new partners and investors will need to become involved.
Tauranga’s City on its Feet (COIF) is an excellent demonstration of a programme that’s tackling the difficult path to sustainability. The three-year Active Communities initiative secured a fourth year’s funding from existing investors. Now into year five, there’s a new sponsor, a committed city-wide network of volunteers, and many hundreds of regular walkers. These are early days. But City on its Feet is here to stay.
